The problem is storage space. If you run the update and don’t have enough empty space on your hard drive, Windows could fail to initialize and crash your system. How much storage space do you need? Microsoft isn’t saying. The mega-update for Windows 10 last Spring needed 16GB of empty space for 32-bit systems and 20GB for 64-bit.

After living without Windows for a long time, I bought a notebook about three years ago. I'm glad I made it dual install, because at one point a Windows update destroyed the complete connectivity: Ethernet, WLAN and Bluetooth all knocked out. Yes, Microsoft, I got the message.

If some enterprising Windows user were to do one download of the update for 32-bit systems and one for 64-bit systems, and publish the resulting sizes, would that solve the problem?

Sibyl L maybe? Probably? But Windows hasn't released the download yet, so everything is pure speculation until mid-October. I think the biggest takeaway is Microsoft's refusal to inform people what to expect and is willing to hobble millions of systems worldwide just to prove they're still in the room.

Jason ON Yanno, there is a reason I kicked M$ to the curb more than a decade ago. Haven't regretted it for a microsecond.

Sibyl L I'm afraid not. The downloaded files are one thing, they still need to be unpacked. But it's weird that in 2018 MS still can't check for the necessary space, Linux is doing that all the time...
