According to Google the only way to make a phone call through Hangouts is from desktop (at least for Android users). However, on my Androd Hangouts app I have the option to dial phone numbers and it works just fine.  My friend, on the other hand, can't. We're both using Android 4.1.2 and we both have Hangouts app version 2.1.100. I checked all my settings (in the app, in GMail and Google Voice) and for the life of me I can't figure out why I can make calls through Hangouts and she can't. Any ideas? https://support.google.com/hangouts/answer/3187125?hl=en#

The Marked Ones

Why am I writing this? Because I'm bored, that's why. As a fan of those paranormal "ghost hunting" shows (well, some of them) I was pleasantly surprised by the first Paranormal Activity  movie. However, towards the end, PA made the same mistake nearly all horror movies make: they try and explain the supernatural. It's the explanation of how and why that decreases the mystery, breaking fear down into chunks of knowledge and understanding.  What typically terrifies us isn't the what but the why . Jason (from the Friday the 13th franchise) is a man in a mask killing people for no discernible reason. And then they gave him a reason taking what made him terrifying away from the audience. Freddy Kruger (from A Nightmare on Elm Street  fame) reached into your dreams, killing you where you were the most vulnerable ... and then they gave him a why making him just another killer on a revenge quest. The people who keep making PA movies are falling into th

I'm thinking it's about that time for a new profile picture for the Community. All in favor? The Yay's have it. Alright, boys and girls, the rules are the same.  1- You must own the rights to the image. The easiest way to do that is to take the picture yourself or know the photographer (such as my friend/S.O. took the picture of me.) 2- Previous submissions will be disqualified. We need new stuff, not old stuff. As someone who just had a birthday I can honestly tell you, old sucks.  3- Image must have something to do with motorcycle riding. Yes, your abs look great but that doesn't have anything to do with riding. Yes your S.O. is cute, but unless they're on a bike they don't need to be entered. 4- I'm sure there's something else. Maybe something about vulgar or nudity. I forget. Logos and self-promotion are fine, but shouldn't be the subject of the photo. Remember, your peers will be judging these and in the event the winner breaks any decency rule

So, I bought a new stator from Rick's Motorsport Electrics. Now I can't get the grommet off the old stator. I've tried everything I can think of even praying it down with some WD40 to loosed the wires up and give the grommet something to slide on.  I feel if I use any more force I'm going to destroy the grommet since it already looks like it's tearing a little around the holes. Any suggestions? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OoP2sF0Ib4

Net neutrality?

Net neutrality? Fast lanes? Minimal standards of service? When most of us have options of one or the other and both are bad, no one in their right mind can conclude the 'the market will handle it.' And yet, the FCC seems to think they can regulate existing service providers properly in the future when they can't even properly regulate ISPs in the now. What? Are they expecting to have more money when their bought and paid for policies are enacted?  http://www.nextgov.com/cio-briefing/2014/05/are-us-broadband-providers-already-violating-new-open-internet-rules/84598/

So tired today. Had to wake up earlier than normal to get Rufus to the vet. He's having surgery today to have a tennis ball sized lipoma in his leg removed (hopefully). Why do I say in when lipomas are traditionally just under the skin? Because this one happens to be beneath and intertwined with his thigh muscle. He should be coming home this afternoon and will be a conehead for the at least a week or two. Boo!

So, I'm through with the second draft of my novel (+/-133,000 words) and I think I'm in danger of "fixing it until it's broken."  I'm going through it a third time just to make sure it flows properly and I find myself making changes I wonder if they really need to be made. I'm having a friend test read it here shortly. She doesn't typically read the genre but she's a stickler for grammar and detail.  Does anyone else run across this? "Fixing it until it's broke?"

Did you know that in 1979 a Hollywood stuntman wanted to build a theme park in Aurora, Colorado roughly three times the size of Disneyland? Apparently, it was supposed to be built in conjunction with the lord of Light movie being "produced" by the CIA as the backdrop of the mission to safely rescue trapped diplomats in Iran. http://scifilandmovie.com/story/ http://www.westword.com/2012-03-08/news/visit-aurora/ If you're really interested in more information, Aurora History Museum is hosting a lecture on May 21 for $4 about the whole affair. I am not going to lie, this is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. For those of you paying attention I had a birthday yesterday.

For those of you paying attention I had a birthday yesterday. Without disclosing how much more awesome I am, let's just say I was still in high school when my mom was my age. The other day I had a conversation with a woman who mentioned her son and granddaughter a handful of times. The woman didn't look much older than me so I asked her how old she was, letting her know my birthday was coming up. She said she was my (new) age. Huh? My age and a grandparent? WTF? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA8bIiJ8i0s

That's a lot of birthday wishes, guys. Thanks!

That's a lot of birthday wishes, guys. Thanks! I did spend some time in the snow taking the dogs for a walk they needed more than I wanted and I have to say, with a birthday in mid-May, I really don't like wearing layers, snow boots and having to scrape the snow off my windshield when I should be enjoying the sun, riding my motorcycle or scaring the ladies with my shirtless body. Oh well.  Now off to do something productive!

I don't know how well this movie did in the theaters, but I can't imagine it did well.

I don't know how well this movie did in the theaters, but I can't imagine it did well. Eeegads, this was a terrible movie. At this point I have to assume their target audience was 5 to 10 year old boys and people who can't read.  If you haven't seen this, my advice: don't. There was so much potential there and either Disney or Gore (the director) said fuck it, we're making a movie no one will want to see . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjFsNSoDZK8

Five Dollar Footlong...? Not so fast.

Image
Usually when I'm hungry on the go and nothing in particular sounds enticing I head on over to my neighborhood Subway and grab whatever strikes my fancy. Generally, I order the $5 of the month, but sometimes, depending on my mood, I order something else. This doesn't happen all the time, maybe once a week, or so. Today was one of those days. I was heading back after a meeting when I decided to swing through Subway for a bite to eat rather than (other) fastfood options or something far less healthy.  Knowing from television commercials the $5 footlong of the month is the Italian BMT I ordered an Italian BMT having not had one in years, generally ordering the Spicy Italian. My five dollar footlong, coupled with 3 cookies (5+1.25 = 6.25) somehow came out to be $7.84 after taxes were applied. This didn't seem right to me, but I didn't really look at the receipt until I arrived home. I was indeed charged more than $5 for my Italian BMT. In fact, I was charged
