Within CyanogenMod, we have dozens of maintainers and hundreds of contributors; none of whom are paid employees. A couple of years ago someone dumped some goldfish in a pond near where I live. At first we counted a handful and then 40 or so. Last year they seemed to explode in population and we started wondering if the pond would be able to support that many.  Yesterday, while out walking the Rufus I noticed through the ice some orange (or gold) in clumps. Today I saw even more. Lots more.  This picture is the same group of fish and that's my shadow. That's just one grouping of "gold" under the ice. Granted, it might be the largest one, but there were at least 3 others I saw and all of them were about half this large. Perhaps the ducks and geese will be feasting come ice melt. Who knows?

Xeno Phrenia likes to have the conversation her way, and when you disagree with her, instead of having civil discourse she calles you names, tries to belittle you and threatens blockage. For example, she post some link to this profile and calls the guy an asshole because she disagrees with his opinion. She doesn't ask him and she just wants to talk about him behind his back. She doesn't believe that because his opinion differs from hers that he is allowed to have it and share it and has reported him for his views. New paragraph. Even though she shared his profile and talked disparagingly about him she will probably have a fit with me sharing her profile and talking disparagingly about her. The other day she had a post make the what's hot stream and chose to shut down comments because she did not like the opinions that differed from her liberal views. She's just as bad as the people from the other end of the political spectrum who like to censor opinions they do not a

Cheeseman Park, Denver, CO

Image
Click for Album A couple of weeks ago I took Rufus (my dog) down to a park here in Denver. It's a park I've only been to a handful of times in my more than a decade living in Denver. Not that it's a bad park, it's just not that close to me and I have to pass by a dozen other parks to get to this particular one. In my spare time, I'm trying to write a novel. My protagonist lives near this park and I needed to know more about it, so I grabbed my camera and walked around, taking pictures of the park, the area around it and Rufus. Why? Because I'm a photographer in my own mind and we always take our cameras with us. The light on this particular day was great, diffused by the clouds perfectly. A lot of the images I took were just pictures of the area so I didn't have to rush down there every time my character walked through the park, but I did get a handful I don't feel too bad sharing. You can click on the collage above or the slideshow below for all the ima

It's the End of the World (as We Know It)

Image
As I get older I think about mortality a lot more than I used to think about the End (with a big "E"). You see, I don't know much about my father's side of the family, but I do  know about my mother's and it's not good. My grandfather died in his 50s from a heart attack, three of my mother's brothers died before hitting 60, themselves: two from a heart attack, and one from stomach (or was it colon?) cancer. One is still alive and well, but he is the youngest born of my mom's brothers and sisters and just barely pushing 60 himself. He's not a vegetarian, per se , but his wife is so he doesn't eat a lot of meat unless he's out and about and eating at a restaurant (usually Mexican). I'm not the healthiest person in the world. I eat what I want, but try and keep red meats to a minimum. I love cookies! I don't eat a lot in one sitting most of the time, preferring to graze throughout the day over gorging, but there are days like the oth

The further I get into my first attempt at a novel the more I realize my first chapters were terrible.

The further I get into my first attempt at a novel the more I realize my first chapters were terrible. I'm really going to dread the re-write/edit phase. Even when I go back to verify something I wonder if that guy graduated high school much less college. Also, I'm finding I wrote too much that doesn't add to the story. Sure, it adds to the protagonist, gives him some more depth, but it doesn't really add to the story. And after 16 chapters (each about 13 pages long) I'm finally getting to the mean and potatoes of the story I want to write.  Apparently I'm wordier than I thought I'd ever be when writing. ;) Is anyone else critical of themselves?

I use the library nearly exclusively for books, movies and music. I love the library and consider them more culturally important than churches. I'm not alone in that belief, but it astounds me that an author considers them a waste. I've seen a lot of "this is what's wrong with the GOP" articles in the past months. Some touting their far right leaning Tea Party and Libertarian allies, some touting their firm grasp on religious conservativism and the less religious demographic that seems to be sweeping up the rear. Some articles have talked about the War on Women, the war against immigration (read: Mexicans and other Latinos), the party's history with Black Americans and civil rights. Here's another article, this one demonstrating the Republican's flagship candidates leaving the public eye. What might be seen inwardly as abdicating the spotlight for the new pop stars could also be seen as abandoning those who followed and supported them during their political successes. What do you think? Does the GOP have to take a deep dark inward look and decide where and what to change to remain relevant, are they hoping to make swift controversial legislative wins now that will have repercussions

Since it's #starwarstuesday  I'll just say, I finished this book last night.  The timeline of the book is after A New Hope and before Empire Strikes Back , starring Han Solo, Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian as well as a few other people from the Expanded Universe. Aside from a few references to Alderaan, the Death Star, Luke and Leia, there is really no connected to the previous installment. I was kind of torn on this book. Timothy Zahn has been very good to the Star Wars universe bringing a level of sophisticated sci-fi where most authors were writing at a GED level. However, he does something with this book I wouldn't have thought Han, Chewbacca or Lando would be involved with: a heist.  Yeah, in a very Ocean's 11 kind of way, with Han playing Danny Ocean , Solo is promised wealth beyond his dreams if he can break into an unbreak-in-able safe: a safe that's made out of a material a lightsaber can't cut through, constantly moving while it's floating aroun

I find it ironic that MySpace became so popular and ushered in the age of social networking when sites like Blogger were already out there for people to write about their day, share their music and show friends their images. Before "social networking" bloggers could follow other bloggers by clicking "follow" and leave comments without a wall or a page. Actually, the more I play around with Blogger, with customization, HTML, embedding videos and slideshows, the more I realize MySpace held no features Blogger didn't already have, they just hit a target market (musicians, bands and entertainers) and made getting your stuff out there much easier than the idea of blogging. After all, blogging is something internet-nerds do, not something hip young people do, right? Unless, of course, you consider Facebook status updates as blogs (which they are), Twitter's 140 character "What I'm doing now" as blogs (which they are and is why Twitter is calle

Hopefully this makes sense. I got distracted a time or two while typing this out, went on a tangent, had to delete about a page's worth of writing and come back to the core point I was trying to make.  http://jasonisms.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-devils-in-advocacy.html

The Devils in the Advocacy

Image
On another post someone argued a point by stating, "let me play devil's advocate, here..." and continued with his line of reasoning. He was defending one point: that a man should not kill another man on the street no matter what he admits to having done, an action which may result in a death penalty conviction in a court of law under different circumstances (ie: not in the street). Since the man admitting guilt admitted to child molestation/rape other people in the discussion attacked the " devil's advocate " for defending a child rapist.  The man spent the rest of the thread trying to convince people he was not defending child rape, but instead was defending the actions of the man who did not kill the confessed child rapist as soon as he heard the confession. It seemed lost on the other people in the discussion that the "devil's advocate" was defending the guy's actions who did not kill on word alone. As far as the others were c

Denver Botanic Gardens Lights 12-24-2012

Image
On December 24th, 2012, for the second time since moving to Colorado I went to the Denver Botanic Gardens  for their Blossoms of Lights event. The first time, with an ex-girlfriend, happened a few years ago and neither of us brought a camera. To be honest, she wasn't entirely thrilled with my desire to photograph my life and I carried the camera (my trusty Pentax *IST DS) rarely. This time, however, I went for their Blossoms of Lights  showcase alone, with the specific intent to bring my camera and tripod, so I could take my time and work on my schedule, not having to worry about someone else's concerns. I chose Christmas Eve thinking most people would be home with the families, preparing for the December 25th festivities.  I was wrong. Apparently, December 25 is a very busy evening for the Gardens. I was surprised at the number of people there and getting shots without  people turned out to be very difficult.  With the overcast skies and the lights from the city of Denver boun

Coming Out

Image
No, it's not what you think. Yes, the term "coming out" usually means "out of the closet" but in this case the closet isn't a gay one, it's a religious one. Or rather, it's an atheistic one. That's right, I'm an atheist. Someone on Google+ posted a question this morning about "coming out" and do we have any interesting stories to tell regarding coming out to our families or friends. I don't. Somewhen along the time I was 12 or 13 I reasoned (the Christian's) god couldn't exist. It's really not that hard to do once you start thinking about it. I didn't need Dawkins, Darwin or Carl Sagan to help me figure it out -- it was simply a conclusion I came to on my own. I remember the first time I said it out loud in front of a parent. I was 17 and signing up for the Army, the recruiter sitting at my mom's dining room table asked a succession of questions and finally came to religion. I answered atheist. My m

Went over to storage a took out an old pair of basic issue combat boots (Army): the black ones, full leather.  Apparently I've never even worn them since they have no creases and the laces have never been threaded. The leather is incredibly stiff. Anyone know how I can un -stiffen the leather? I remember an old barracks tale that said you can soak leather boots in water and then wear them until they're dry, but I don't want to try that since it sounds painful.

I've been using Streamzoo for more than a year now on recommendation as a photo-sharing app before Instagram was available for Android. it takes a minute to figure out, but it's a good app with rich features to include a full-featured browser interface. I don't use Instagram too much anymore since their ToS debacle. http://magicelfbox.blogspot.com/2013/02/instagram-vs-streamzoo.html

Instagram Vs. Streamzoo

Image
[Note: after typing out this entire post and then not publishing it, I found this one at TalkAndroid . It's more comprehensive than mine.] Last year when Instagram became available for Android I, like millions of others, downloaded and started using the program to share images from my mobile life. Personally, I used it as a Photo of the Day venue, keeping Streamzoo as a place where I shared images I thought were shareworthy. Someone on Google+ asked me if I could write a comparison piece of the two and I procrastinated for, well, about a year. But, I can't seem to get the idea out of my head, so: The contenders: Instagram Long the go-to app for iOS hipsters, Instagram made a name for itself as being the place to be for mobile image sharing with quick and simple camera filters to give mobile images a little trendy panache. When the app opened to Android, salivating Android fanboys and girls jumped on the app with wild abandon. Unlike sharing images to a cloud storage service, In
