Perhaps the fine folks over at Warner Bros. Pictures will finally be able to make a decent superhero movie. It's Been 15 Days Without a Phone

Image
Tomorrow marks two weeks since I broke my OnePlus-1. I've spent more than a few hours reading reviews and watching YouTube videos on a number of replacement devices. It's been a whirlwind of a journey as I debated one feature over another, what is most important to me and what will hold up the longest. There were some caveats, of course. Such as, due to financial restrictions, the device couldn't cost too much and it should work well on my cellular provider's network. The thing is, I like being unique. My truck isn't very common, my motorcycle isn't very common - nothing I do is "follow the pack." When everyone was buying iPhones, I was an early Android adopter. When everyone else had Motorola Razr phones, I had a Blackberry Pearl. Before that the popular phone was the StarTac flip phone and I was sporting the Nokia. I've also always preferred production devices over entertainment ones. I need a powerhouse that allows me to be functional, not p

Orange Kitty in #BlackandWhite

Image
Orange Kitty in #BlackandWhite Taken just a few minutes ago in #BW mode on my #Pentax. Kitty was not happy being my model, less so than the dogs quite possibly. I keep trying to get photos of his teeth because he has two sets of upper fangs (canines. Seriously, are they canine teeth on a cat?), but he almost never smiles. He's ten years old and this is his third home. From what I understand, he belonged to a family and when the parents broke up he went with the father to live with his brother. The cat's owner either (1) moved back in with his ex-wife or (2) found a new girlfriend to move in with. Regardless, the cat was left with his brother. My roommate met the brother a bar who told her he was trying to find the cat a home since he didn't really want it around. So, she took it. She calls it "Butters," short for "Butterscotch." I call it "Orange Cat" because it's orange. It had a completely different name before.

Could the failure of the #AHCA be a boon for #DonaldTrump?

Could the failure of the #AHCA be a boon for #DonaldTrump? Per this article, it may be since a break from the #GOP agenda frees Trump up for other causes he campaigned on and yet we have to take to heart Trump's severe lack of anything considered presidential, such as his inability to "make a deal" and "win so often we'll get tired of winning." And there's the new rumor Trump will be turning over much of the Executive Office's agenda to his son-in-law, Jared Kusher: a non-elected, not Congressional vetted appointee taking over the responsibilities traditionally reserved to the Vice-President's office. How many of you use Twitter as well as Google+? What about Facebook or LinkedIN? Since I spend most of my time on G+ I've created a habit: content creation here, then sharing to other social media networks. It's sort of what we see daily with people sharing tweets here, except the other way around. I find it a good way to demonstrate the G+ community as well as showcasing the lack of 140 character restrictions. For the record, Facebook doesn't pull in the content (images) from G+ like Twitter (usually) does.

Google Products - a complaint

Oh, come on, Google! This has got to be one of the most annoying websites ever.  Let me explain: We all have that (annoying) red bar at the top of our pages. Saddled between the "SEARCH" bar and our account profile pic are the 9 squares set in a 3x3 formation. Clicking this box opens up shortcuts to Google services. Easy peasy, right? Sure. Unless you're looking for something not there. So, you scroll down and click on "Even more from Google" which opens up the page linked to below.  Great! Right? Well, no.  You find the product you're looking for and instead of clicking on it, thinking it's going to take you to the associated page, you have to know to use the "Getting Started" link below the associated service, then choose for web , for mobile , etc. Click on "Getting Started" And worse yet, not even all products are listed! Years ago - more than a decade - my go-to jacket was a textile one that could be unzipped to a breathable mesh. It had some basic armor in it, but nothing else; was comfortable in the summer time and protected from the elements well enough in the spring and fall. Then I read an article somewhere (I can't remember) about leather versus textile, or ballistic nylon, jackets. As soon as I could I went out and bought my first leather jacket, a Joe Rocket Blaster III, if I remember correctly. I got a really good deal on it. For me it boiled down to durability, protection and longevity. My current leather jacket is an AGV and no matter how hot it is outside, I'm always wearing it. A few of my riding buddies don't wear leather because they say it's too hot when the temperatures are above 85°F. Personally, I'd rather be a little hot and sweaty than covered in road rash. What do you wear? Leather? Textile? Ballistic nylon? Titanium reinforced steel plating? Just your skin? ht

Day 5 ... Without a Cell Phone

Image
Image For No Reason Whatsoever Life without a cell phone has been pretty good, actually. I find myself paying attention to the people around me as well as the TV instead of catching up on headlines or perusing social media. There were a few times, while watching TV, I missed having it around when I wanted to look up an actor or the veracity of a statement made in the show. On Saturday, while out walking Rufus, we came upon a coyote drinking out of the creek. While we didn't get close enough for a great photo, it would have been nice to record video of Rufus barking at the animal. And then there was Sunday. I took the dogs to the dog park, located on a state park, and was harassed by the park volunteer before she called the rangers with some sob story about my behavior being out of line. Sadly, I couldn't record the affair without a cell phone. It was then that I truly wished I had something with which to document the exchange. Luckily there were about a dozen witnesses,

Watch carefully. What they did to Obamacare and other agencies is what the #GOP will do to ever more: make them fail and then run a campaign on the failure of government. That's their modus opernadi . Day One Without a Cellphone

Image
Let me preface this by saying I grew up long before cell phones were in everyone's pocket. In fact, I didn't have my first cell phone until I was in my twenties, so I know a thing or two about living without having the world's knowledge at my fingertips. My first day without a cell phone was both frustrating and liberating. It began as all things do - in the beginning: My alarm didn't go off. As it turns out, like many of us, I use my cell phone as an alarm clock, which is convenient since it's on the charger all night next to the bed. Normally in the mornings I'll check for any emails that came in overnight, check the headlines to make sure no one has started World War III and then, maybe if I'm not in a rush, I'll flip through social media to see who's doing all the exciting things I'm not. Or look at pretty pictures. The real inconvenience came when I realized I had no reminder for an appointment. Luckily for me I knew the appointment

I titled this "Oops" as though I this was an error. No, this was not an error. This is what happens when your frustrated with a (Google) app constantly not working right and a touchscreen that has decided to have dead spots - spots on the screen that no longer reacted to touch.  Yeah, this was no "Ooops" but rather the result of not having a hammer or rock nearby. I really would have preferred a sledge hammer. So, now I'm in shopping for a new inexpensive phone and have my eye on a 2-2 1/2 year old BlackBerry just because it's cheap (and has a physical keyboard. Oh, how I miss having a physical keyboard!) Heck, I'd even consider the new Nokia if they were out already. In the meantime I'm phone-less. I remember way back in the days of Google Buzz, when Google was in the news for removing the account of someone under 13, saying that Google needs to create a tier-like system for children's accounts. In short, my idea was to allow kids to have email accounts, but they would have to be tied to a parent's account until the kid turned whatever age Google decided was appropriate. Am I the only one who gets asked to "participate in a quick survey about our site", agrees to provide feedback and then gets annoyed when the content is gone and the survey is up? Not only that, but when the survey is loooong and when you're finally finished with it there's no link back to the content so you have to close the browser window. I'm looking at you, The Guardian. That was friggen annoying and I decided reading that particular article wasn't worth the hassle. I've also decided not to fill out any "helpful" surveys for you in the future. In fact, I may avoid the URL " https://theguardian.com " for a few days, too. https://theguardian.com

Remember those old "company towns" where a company would pay a worker, let's say, $500/week then charge them $1000 for rent in the company house, then groceries, utilities, etc? When all was said and done those who broke even were considered the lucky ones, the rest were forever indebted to the company. This sort of reminds me of that. Have you ever been to a strip club? I promise you, the markup on liquor is more than enough to pay for bouncers and DJs, especially when the dancers aren't getting paid in the first place. http://www.9news.com/mb/money/business/dancers-sue-strip-clubs-say-theyre-forced-to-pay-for-their-work/422678707?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=gplus

Those of us paying attention saw this coming. Sure, some who voted #Republican will claim repealing #Obamacare is still the right choice, but many more, those who risk becoming the uninsured masses and those who will see their rates double or triple under the #GOP offering, will have to question whether #DonaldTrump and the rest of the Right is looking out for their best interests. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/03/14/opinion/the-original-lie-about-obamacare.html?_r=0&referer=https://www.google.com/

So, I haven't been blogging that much lately. There's no one to blame but myself. I think it's because I was trying to keep up with too many blogs at once: a motorcycle blog (but I didn't ride that much last summer), a photography blog with nothing but pictures I took and maybe a few words about why I grabbed that particular shot and why I chose that particular post-processing effect and a personal one where I shared some of my thoughts if I thought someone might be interested. And yet, I covered all these bases in social media (Google+ mostly), which was easier to post to from mobile. As far as I was concerned, blogging is about long form content. But then I started thinking in long form content. Not that I'm not always consumed with large galaxy-spanning thoughts, but I was thinking quick posts to social media just weren't cutting it anymore. And yet, I let the blogs fade into the background. A month, maybe two, ago I decided to consolidate all my Blogge

Remember, folks: dogs are always better than cats. Originally shared by Yonatan Zunger There are a few parasites which are known to affect the higher functions of the mind - rabies making dogs vicious, parasitic wasps which commandeer orb spiders, flatworms which make ants commit a strange sort of suicide atop blades of grass, where they can be eaten by sheep. And, of course, there's toxoplasma gondii, whose primary habitat is in the intestines of cats, and which can be responsible for "crazy cat lady syndrome." But while we usually think of this as being a rare, acute condition affecting only a few people, it turns out that infection rates may be far higher than we imagined - 10-20% of Americans, and over 50% of Europeans - and that even these low-level infections may have subtle but significant effects on our personalities. We may well be, in short, under the effect of mind-controlling parasites right now. And things as fundamental as our introversion or extroversion,
