A Piece of the Whole

The world is an ecosystem, built through millions of years of trial and error, of balancing one force of nature against another. In Yellowstone, this wonderful experiment has proven just how detrimental each and every species on this planet is to the world around it. I'm reminded of a conversation I had on Facebook about prairie dogs in Colorado. A friend of mine is very involved in the local ranching community and his friends were all decrying prairie dogs and how they weren't good for horses. When I explained that horses were the invasive species here and that prairie dogs are a valuable part of the local ecology I was shouted down with such vitriol that I had to wonder if those people were capable of understanding the larger picture.

I think about this all the time.

I think about this all the time. Is technology making us dumber? Not just less knowledgeable, but actually dumber? This came to a head the other day when none of us had cell signal and I pulled out a physical paper map. My friend, a 36 year old engineer, couldn't figure out how to read it. On the news a few years ago a woman drove into a landscaped pond in front of an office building because the GPS told her to take a left. Safety Brief

Image
If you haven't guess yet, I ride a sportbike. An SV1000s , to be specific. What I love about the bike is, not only can it keep up with the hyperbikes in the twisties of Colorado, but it's comfortable enough for commuting and longer rides. Especially after I replaced the stock seat with a Corbin one. The group I ride with are typically sportbike riders. On any given ride we might have your typical race replicas, big engine bikes like the  Hayabusa's or bikes that don't fit into any particular category like  Speed Triples . More often than not, though, the bikes that show up for rides are superbikes, very similar to their race brethren, just as fast and just as aggressive. Since most of us push the legal envelope when riding we have a pre-ride safety brief before each and every group ride, even when the ride is filled with veterans. For the rides I organize, I like to use these safety tips in my brief: Don't Die That's right. Rule number one is don't die. Yo

Well, that sucks.

Well, that sucks. I went to run a few errands on the bike and after the third one, the bike wouldn't start. As it turned out, my half-assed wiring job (not really half-assed, just the connector I used didn't seat well enough) left the battery drained and dead.  And, since I wasn't planning on being gone more than an hour I left my cellphone on the charger ... at the house. Grrr.... I had to call a friend to bring me new wiring connectors and a crimper to get it fixed, then had to sit there while the battery charged off her car.  But I'm home safely now.

Personally I think this article should have been about the trend of victimhood and not about Christians as victims. I've seen so-called 'victimhood' a lot over the years and noticed myself the truism of 'he who is loudest is right'. Both if these things annoy me. I don't know if there's a psychological term for waiting to be a victim, or looking for some excuse to be a victim, but that behavior is rampant in our modern American culture. http://feedly.com/e/j2YFr0bB

A Friend's Self-Relfection

A friend of mine called me just a little bit ago. Granted, I use the rem friend  a little liberally here. I met this guy, let's call him Matt, about 8 years ago at a party hosted by a mutual acquaintance. The party was geared towards small business owners in the area, people who were out of work and people who were trying to expand their networks beyond friends and co-workers. Matt was nicely dressed, thin in a 1950's working father kind of way with a head of silvered hair. He was quick with a laugh and loved telling anyone who would listen about his successes in the commercial truck leasing industry. He and I bonded over mutual unemployment and the dreams of a better job somewhere right around the corner. You see, we were both casualties of the Bush Administration policies that tanked the economy. Unfortunately for him, he had a wife and small children at home while I merely had my dog and mortgage. I ended up losing both. While I eventually took a part-time job so far

Staging Point At the last minute I invited myself along on a overnight motorcycle trip. Now, I know what you're thinking: That Jason is a such as ass inviting himself on someone else's ride . But, you need to understand, the ride had an open invite and I was just one of 5 other people who decided to partake of the invitation. The plan was simple: leave Denver, ride out to Glenwood Springs , the long way, and return. The original (tentative) route was to take highway 285 out of Denver to Pine Junction, south to Woodland Park, west to Divide and south to Cripple Creek . After Cripple Creek we'd head down to Canon City and take highway 50 west and somehow make our way up to our final destination where we'd simmer our sore muscles in the hot springs for which the city is famous. However, like all well made plans, this plan fell apart before the first kickstand was up. We were supposed to leave at 9:00am but didn't get on the road before 9:20am. Bob, a former racer turn

Runabout

I'd been busy the past couple of weeks and didn't get a chance to ride much. That's okay because the weather was nasty during those days, only getting nicer, once more, during this past weekend. Unfortunately, I was busy doing non-motorcycle riding things and didn't get a chance to put miles on the rubber. Today, I did. A little over two hundred miles door-to-door, cold (at elevation), rain (okay, sprinkles), a lost +GoPro (that I was able to find again), and a trip down a dirt road. No, I didn't know the road was dirt at the time. Yes, there was one other avenue, but that was the one I was trying to avoid. Remember, girls and boys, if everything goes according to plan, it's not an adventure.

Went for a motorcycle ride today. Somewhere around 210 miles. Some of them were even fun, some were in traffic, some were on a dirt road through a construction zone ... in the rain. Okay, not real rain, just a sprinkle, but it was enough to make the dirt muddy-ish. I also rode up over 11,000ft and froze my fingers off. That was less fun than it sounds.

Motorcycle Friends

Image
Some friends of mine came to town this August and I had a chance to go riding with them while they were here. Steve and Sash are a married couple who divested themselves of all their belongings and hit the rode. They live almost exclusively on their bikes, traveling around the county, making friends and enjoying the good life. I didn't take a lot of pictures while they were in town but these are a few I was able to grab. The first image is of South Park County, Colorado from Kenosha Pass. Then Sash's Vstar 650, my SV and a picture of Steve and Sash.
