Robocop 2014

Had a chance to finally catch this movie. I didn't know what to expect from the various reviews I'd read, some loving it and some hating it for various reasons. And, I'm bored with nothing else to write about, so this is what you get. What did I like? The basic story was the same.  What didn't I like? They gave more backstory to the (evil) corporation and less to Murphy, his partner or his family life. Yes, we get it, this is a metaphor for defense contractors trying to militarize the police industry. It didn't need to be explained in such detail.  In the original, Murphy/Robocop's partner was a woman. Why couldn't the partner have been a woman in this one? The first film was a story about the triumph of humanity over corporate interests and technology. I remember clearly when, in the original film, Murphy's partner walks up to him and calls him Murphy when everyone else is calling him Robocop. In this film, we don't see the same strugg

It's the only conclusion that can be drawn from the evidence. What evidence? Little bit of "secret" American history.

Little bit of "secret" American history. Did you know, at the cusp of WWII, Jackie Conchran, a woman pilot of the time, was able to organize a women's flight group for the Army Air Corps? They didn't fly fighter missions but instead shuttled aircraft around, trained male pilots and pretty much did all the logistic work leaving male pilots free for war. However, it was the male pilots who felt threatened and lobbied the Army to remove these women. Not only that, but they requested the women's role be classified essentially wiping them from the history books. http://waspmuseum.org/jackie-cochran-biography/

Cathedral on the Plains

Image
While returning to Colorado from a funeral in Florida I took a little side trip to Victoria, KS and the Cathedral on the Plains: http://www.kansastravel.org/cathedralofheplains.htm It was about 100° F out and we had dogs with us so we didn't stop for long. Just long enough to pop our heads in, grab a couple of shots and then walk the dogs around the grounds. I'd hoped to grab a shot of a lonely church settled out amongst the rolling fields of Kansas, but the village of Victoria got in the way. Instead, I only grabbed these couple of shots with my phone. Interesting story, according to a church employee, the area was settled by German-Russians. In the seventeenth century (?) Germans were invited to Russia to cultivate the land with the promise of no taxes and no military service for 100 years. When that time was up those families, who never assimilated, left Russia for the New World and promised of no taxes and free land to farm. Some of them came to Kansas. This church was buil

"If there’s one thing I learned in Afghanistan, it’s this: You can’t win someone’s heart and mind when you are pointing a rifle at their chest." We've seen the us versus them mentality spreading for a while now as police departments and unions are working to separate themselves from public scrutiny as much as possible and civilian police forces have been becoming more militarized as though preparing for war and not for public service and protection. And let's be clear here: a military, an army, is an assault force. Whatever the politicians and the pundits tell you about police missions or security missions, the military is a political force of arms. The police, however, are intended to serve a different mission. Their job is to protect and serve, to interact with the public and create positive trusting relationships. As police departments continue to act like military forces the divide will only get larger, public trust in the police will only decrease and a final co

Living A Third World Dream

Just read  +Darlena Cunha 's  article. I can totally relate to everything she said, except for the kids, the Mercedes and the food stamps. I lost my job and consequently lost my house when weeks and months of unemployment turned into years. Picking Up Food Stamps I was denied unemployment benefits for some reason the state (of Colorado) never really did clarify. Just, "You don't qualify." I watched as my saving account went from five digits to zero because I was still paying my bills and feeding myself and my dog. The days became long, hours and hours of sending out cover letters and resume's, of going to [free] networking events and volunteering just to make additional connections. Occasionally I'd get a call about a position but at less than half of what I was making before and far less than I needed to keep my house. Nothing happened. Sure, I'd get the occasional interview and then turned away for a cheaper candidate. I'd get referrals from

My Aunt

My aunt is sick. Her body is bent and broken thanks to a severe case of  rheumatoid arthritis and last year the doctors decided to take one foot and the other leg, citing the arthritis aggressively cutting circulation to her feet. Last week she was diagnosed with lung cancer. This past weekend she had a stroke. She turned down any form of treatment for her cancer because (1) she wouldn't recover and (2) because she didn't want to experience all that pain and suffering to still have the cancer and the arthritis. My mom called this morning to say the doctors gave her a two week window to live. Apparently, the plan is to have her cremated, but I was wondering, with her conditions, whether or not donating her body to research would be the wisest course of action. She won't. Believe it or not, she's way too modest to let people poke around her body. Heck, she won't even let people take pictures of her. Life gave my aunt the short end of the stick. It really
