A PhD instructor of an online course was dead set on failing a student because the student chose to write a report on Australia the country. Apparently, the instructor corrected her and told her Australia was a continent, not a country. The student disagreed and provided proof of her claims and yet the instructor was not swayed.

What we commonly call Australia is both continent and country. The continent actually includes parts of other countries (like Indonesia), so to be very specific we should say "Commonwealth of Australia" if we mean the country - which usually nobody does.
