No, those are not synonyms.  A shibboleth for hipsters might be that unkempt beard paired with a supershort spiked hairdo. A shibboleth for Grateful Dead fans would be the tie-dye, or the skeleton tatoo.  It's the thing that identifies a person with a particular group, not the group itself. 

The local pronunciation of a word, so that you can tell a foreigner by the way they say the word.  So in my town, Waltham, if you say it rhyming with Dedham or Needham, you're not from here. We say Wall-tham to rhyme with Wall-ham.
