By the article, it sounds like something needs to be done with overpopulation of horses.

They eat them in Britain. Up until recently, the USA was a leading exporter of horse meat. Until the government started shutting them down. We'll gobble up cows all day, but our emotional affair with horses has us creating problems we can't fix.

They are eaten in Germany too. I had horse roast one Thanksgiving in Germany.

It's funny how cultural taboos work. Like Tiffany Gill pointed out, horses are a symbol of American Freedom, so we tend to be horrified when they are killed. In India, cows are very much given the same protection, for religious reasons, but mostly as they are considered a working animal that people tend to bond with, much like our horses. I've heard the hill people in Switzerland eat cats, which is pretty much not okay wherever you go. :p

And dogs, don't forget dogs. People in the Far East and perhaps elsewhere eat dogs.
