Did you know dog meat is served in restaurants in South Korea? I didn't. In the United States and most western countries, Fido is a family companion and while it's not ethical to judge another culture by our standards, anyone who doesn't at least (humanely) butcher the animal first is acting without proper care.

South Korea relies on western consumerism for their economy and needs to be aware that we do not accept the practice of skinning and boiling dogs alive.

Over 6,000 restaurants in South Korea are still serving dog meat even though it is now illegal. In many Asian countries dogs are boiled alive or skinned alive when slaughtered. It's an unbelievably horrendous & torturous way to die.

I know a lot of you hate seeing this kind of posts on G+, but the Asian industry slaughtering dogs & cats is how I first got involved in animal rights & it will always be my main animal welfare concern. It's intolerable what is happening, please take a minute & sign this petition. The more awareness we bring to these activities maybe we can finally stop them.

Horse meat is served in most European countries. Do we start boycotting them to? Cows are sacred in India, should they boycott the US and other western countries? These are cultural differences.
Jason ON said…
I merely asked that the animals are ethically treated, not banned.
John Sawyer said…
And because someone published this on the internet it is true and we must get all hot and bothered? Must be a fact if published on the internet.
Jason ON said…
Lots of things are true, whether they're on the internet or not.
James Chisholm said…
hey john, the photos make it true, has nothing to do with the internet.
Gee Willikers said…
Oh, I'm pretty sure it's factual. In fact they boil them alive because the meat is more tender, due to the rush of adrenaline before death as I understand.
James Chisholm said…
I wish we could boil South Koreans Alive.

I agree that animals should be humanely killed. However the comment about their economy relying on western consumerism worries me. Would not buying samsungs & Kias end this?
Gee Willikers said…
Its a cultural thing as far as I'm concerned. I may disagree, but I tolerate.
Jason ON said…
Just Plumbing, no it probably wouldn't end this practice, but when kids are working in factories in China or India Americans are up in arms even though it's only a cultural difference. Companies and governments change their ways when their consumer-base becomes upset and S. Korea's practices suddenly shoot to international attention.
April Benney said…
He's not bashing the cultural difference of them eating cats & dogs; it's the fact that they treat them so cruelly & torture them.
Just Plumbing said…
Agreed. Culture is only based on what a group believes is normal. International publicity of this may solve the problem.
However I honestly don't see the difference between this & boiling lobsters live.
Jason ON said…
Lobsters are essentialls sea roaches while doggies share our beds, couches and lives.
John Sawyer said…
Also crabs and crawfish are boiled alive.
Jason ON said…
Those are sea bugs, too.
John Sawyer said…
Oh, so because they come from the sea, they don't have the same rights are land animals? They don't have feeling?
Jason ON said…
No, because they're bugs.
Just Plumbing said…
I think that is part of the problem. We treat pets as family members here. (I'm writing this with my spoiled dog curled up on my bed)

I agree with you that all animals should be treated humanely, but playing devil's advocate, if I had a pet lobster I'd be furious at Red Lobster.

It's the hipocracy I don't like. It's ok to eat cows, but not horses. It's ok to boil lobster, but not dogs.
Just Plumbing said…
I really don't understand the bug reason. What does that mean?
John Sawyer said…
Jason ON Dogs are just overgrown rodents.
John Sawyer said…
Scott Nuttall I need to chill out? If one classifies sea creatures as merely bugs, I wonder how they classify people.
Just Plumbing said…
So barbecuing butterflies, OK or not ok? They are bugs, but they are cute bugs. Not like disgusting roaches.
Just Plumbing said…
The question Scott Nuttall is why is it ok to boil lobster & not a dog? I think both are bad. However it's hard to tell someone that this class of animal is less valuable than another.

People become enraged when they hear of these injustices that another class, group, country commit but make excuses about similar behavior from their own class, group, country.
Jason ON said…
Just Plumbing, yes, they're still bugs, But who would want to waster BBQ sauce on something without meat?
Just Plumbing said…
The same people who eat grasshoppers & locusts.
Jason ON said…
Same thing: there's not enough meat to BBQ.
John Sawyer said…
Scott Nuttall I have been to Korea and I have eaten dog. I never found any evidence that these dogs were boiled alive. The claim that pictures prove otherwise is invalid as we have seen so many photos photoshoped. That being so, the fact that it is okay to classify some creatures as okay to boil alive and not others is cultural snobbery.
April Benney said…
I agree that boiling lobsters is cruel also. I had someone tell me once that the lobster dies almost immediately, they don't sit there in the boiling water suffering. I haven't checked into this so idk if its true or not. I still don't think it's right to boil any type of seafood.
Just Plumbing said…
Scott Nuttall you told john sawyer to chill out while answering my question. One of the problems Americans have is they want others to change their point of view or lifestyle while hypocritically doing something similar. If lobsters & crabs are just "bugs", why aren't dogs just rodents?

April Benney said…
You're right, pictures can be altered. Here's your proof.

I think the reason we are offended more is we would not want to see our dog be hurt, especially cruely. I have a chicken & goose. I could never eat them, but I don't tell others they shouldn't eat chicken. Just don't eat my chicken.
Just Plumbing said…
April Benney that video was terrible. I really don't know how people can do these things to animals. I'm not a vegetarian, but when I see things like that I consider it. This is why we really need to get back to local food. If people had to kill the animal themselves, they'd eat a lot less meat.
John Sawyer said…
I grew up in an area that we killed our own chickens. Many people still kill their own pigs and cows. I don't eat less meat.
April Benney said…
Maybe you don't John, but a lot of others would.
I had tried numerous times before to go vegan for animal rights reasons. It wasn't until I realized meat was making me sick (my body can't digest it properly) that I finally was able to go vegan.

I am 62 years old. I have no medical problems and take no medications. Not everyone is the same. I had to eat all the wrong foods just to maintain my weight.
Just Plumbing said…
john sawyer I have killed bulls, goats, rabbits... Ate them all. But do you think the average person could or would do that? Would the people eating that dog be willing to throw it live into a pot of boiling water just because it would make the meat more tender? I doubt it.
April Benney said…
Oh did I confuse my information from the article? My bad, it's been a long day. Doesn't make sense though that its ok to serve dog meat, but not ok to raise dogs for the purpose of eating them.
John Sawyer said…
April Benney By that same thinking, it is not okay to raise cows, pigs and chickens for the purpose of eating them. But we do.
April Benney said…
Yeah but to make it illegal to raise dogs for the purpose of eating them.... How else are they supposed to get the dog meat they serve in their restaurants?
Just Plumbing said…
April Benney the US is full of laws like this.

I'm giving this off memory so I may have a detail wrong. The US used to ship quite a bit of horse meat to Japan until an animal rights group fought to make it illegal to kill horses for meat. So the horses are shipped to México alive, & slaughtered less humanely there & then shipped to Japan. That same animal rights group is now trying to undo the law because conditions are worse in Mexico & it didn't stop a thing.
