I'm not one of these people that think the UN is out for global domination and superseding sovereignty of individual nations, however, the internet has evolved to a global communications system controlled, in most part, by NGOs, providers and users. You know, capitalism in an open market.

However, it looks like the ITU has determined free access to a global network isn't a responsibility many people can handle on their own. Instead, the ITU would rather governments have ultimate control of a communications tool, thus limiting dissent and organizing.

In America we fought SOPA and CISPA using the very tool the government sought to take away from us for that very reason. Now the UN is seeking the same sort of internet restrictions that favor government might over individual right.

All behind the closed doors of secrecy.

But...but...but...the UN has no legislative power. None. It can talk all it wants (and it does) but it cannot do a thing...it might serve as fodder for some sort of SOPA2 ("The UN thinks it s a good idea etc")...But here in the US - how many people do you know that think anything coming from the UN is important and timely? I don't know a single person...

It's not about the UN having legislative power, it's about the treatise signed with the UN member nations that have the full effect of law.

Yeah because everyone follows UN treatises...I still think this is much ado about nothing - just another Cold War dinosaur desperately trying to hold on to some semblance of relevance.

She swore she'd never be active on G+ again over the real names policy, and that her millions of followers wouldn't either. She posted on twitter that we were all just a bunch of trolls, and some articles about G+. Something about being brought to tears over the activity here. IDK - just surprise to see a post from her.

Ahh... I remember that. Well, most of that.

Oh god the Real Name Wars...

I don't follow her so I am not sure, I guess she may have. It was the pomposity of the "millions of followers" etc., that struck me. More over, when I was trying to figure out who she was, I read a few articles and found them to be sensationalist and escalating in nature, written to create outrage.

Thomas Miller much e-blood was spilled over it. "Pull a chair kiddies and grandpa will tell you the stories from the days when people had, you know, real names..."
