sounds like it would make a great villan in an up and coming scifi space movie..

How would it reconcile "Thou Shalt Not Kill" with all the injunctions to kill people for various "offences"?

Most of humanity would be destroyed within an hour

Hopefully the Robot would be wise enough to apply them. In that case I would feel safe with regard to him, but not with regard to Godless humans or those who use God for their own purposes.

Presumably you've never worked on the Sabbath, Randy Kirk, otherwise you're inviting a painful execution.
Randy Kirk said…
The New Testament is the OT revealed or explained. Jesus came to give us a break from the legalism of the OT. It is "wise" to take a day off per week, and it will be good for our health and spirit, but there is no condemnation for those who call the name of Jesus.
Bodhipaksa said…
Tell that to the OT robot, Randy Kirk :)
Randy Kirk said…
Well, even the OT robot would have wanted to understand the law in the way that the prophets explained it. God set up the world and designed people with the capability to follow the principles that He recommends in the Bible. But he also provided free will. Then he says over and over: Do the things that I command and life will go well for you. He wasn't saying that if they failed to do this or that, they would be condemned, but rather that they would be subject to the world's designed-in natural consequences. Over time the "people" as a group defied His direction and tried to get others to "convert" to their idols and deviancy. This is when he stepped in to correct the people. But only after many fair warnings. If your robot gets all that, let him loose.

"He wasn't saying that if they failed to do this or that, they would be condemned."

He quite often seemed to say that if you failed to do this or that you would be stoned to death, though.
Every human would be put to death . Simple as that .
Randy Kirk said…
Well, Hmmm, they weren't all put to death. Some were stoned to death. Pretty good deterrent.
Randy Kirk said…
I'd happily help stone to death anyone who rapes or kills a child, anyone who kills another person in the furtherance of another felony act.
Do you realize what u just said lol

Fuck no. Anyone who thinks they would be is ignorant of all the contradictory and ridiculous laws of the bible.
Anyone who thinks anything in the bible isnt ridiculous is a walking contradiction and ignorant of life

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that non of you has ever read the Bible from cover to cover or studied the contents in any detail at all. That you are mindlessly believing others you follow instead of thinking for yourself.
Hahaha actually a true non believer will read and question the fictional book you speak of from cover to cover because it's so much like a train wreck you have to watch .
Randy Kirk said…
That was a political answer if I ever heard one. Have you read it? Did you do so with an open mind or a mind bent on only finding what you were predisposed to believe? I’m still saying no one who has answered has read it
Okay just so we are clear ... yes I have read it cover to cover. I read it with an open mind ...and was surprised The writer(s) clearly did not have an open mind and followed blindly without question .... wrote what they were told etc etc ... you speak of wanting to kill people who rapes or kills a child ... perhaps you should re read the book of fiction and re address what you wrote .
Randy Kirk said…
What surprised you most?
You sure you wanna hear that answer lol ....
Randy Kirk said…
Happy to. I've read 8 translations and the entire commentary of J Vernon McGee almost twice. I'm published and teach Bible. So I'd love to hear just the one item that surprised you most
Well the all loving all mighty all forgiving god is an egotistical selfish asshat. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me. So what happened to all loving .... Hrmm contradiction 101. Please also refrain from using the term teach the bible ... it's brainwashing and Controlling weak Minded idividuals using a fictional book based on mythical gods created long before this new god came about . God did not create man. Man created god and forced it on everyone in turn raping their minds

Just to be clear the question is about whether you would trust a robot who enforced the laws of the bible not, "Would you trust a robot who enforced modern day interpretations of the bible by kind open-minded people who have chosen to ignore whole passages of the bible because they contradict the teachings of Christ."

The bible has some pretty screwed up crap in it (Deuteronomy 28) and it's only because we ignore said crap that the religion can even be said to be peaceful with today's interpretations of it.

So, first. I teach Bible with everyone else's Bible open. Using the Socratic method, we discuss the meaning. Most of those in my class have advanced degrees, as do I. Most have been studying the BIble as long as I have.

Now as to your biggest surprise. You have conflated a few concepts, but I'll even deal specifically with your own version. He is a jealous God, and with good reason. All other purported gods are only going to create chaos. They are made of wood or stone. They seemingly require sacrifices for a good harvest or to win a war. They do not seek or seem to have any need for a relationship with humans. They are generally not seen as kind or the source of love.

The God of the Bible is clear and consistent in his plan for us. And the plan has not changed for 2000 years, with exactly the same content for 1800 years. The OT has the same content for up to 6000 years as shown by the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Bible doesn't need to change with the wind as do other religions or science or philosophy.

Then came the Christ who changed everything about human history, including that the rule of law should be about love and intent, not merely the words. He said that the humble will inherit the earth. And his disciples said that they would follow that path of true humility.

So God is jealous intentionally. Sins are punished by natural consequence. 2nd and 3rd generations are commonly affected by the sins of any generation, both specifically within families and throughout communities or cultures. The good news is that love also permeates through to those 2nd and 3rd generations.

Reread Deut 28 and see that the results he talks about are the results of natural consequences of following wisdom.

Sure, you can read it that God will be actively involved minute by minute creating benefits and problems for people, but if you read the entire Bible, you’ll see that this is not how it works. God pretty much leaves his chosen people and everyone else to their own devices day by day. He comes in hear and there to specifically deal with the Jews or others in order to create a lesson for history, or to try and persuade the Jews to repent, but for the most part we act and our actions produce consequences. Our choices are our undoing or a blessing that we can build on.
Sigh .. the point is he shouldn't punish anyone. Baby is born with leukemia or cancer ... wtf did that baby do? Nothing ...it's a baby hasn't had a chance to do wrong or choose wrong. Yet he chose to punish it just because he can. Don't give me that he works in mysterious ways bullshit either. Or its a test ... a test of what ..to see how much control he has over babies... pfffttt come on man ... how can anyone believe is this almighty thing is Devine and awesome

So, lets be clear. The death of innocence is one of the hardest issues in religion. But most Biblical scholars believe that true innocents go immediately to heaven, so they are not subject to the other difficulties of life.

Then there are those who are born with abnormalities. I don’t know about you, but I have several friends and family members who fit this class, and they seem happier and more joyous than most people I know And my brother and his wife seem to be among the happiest people I know after adopting and raising a crack baby for the last 23 years, regardless of all of his many, many issues, including autism.

I punished my children when they were growing up, because I loved them enough to provide boundaries and consequences to behavior (walking into the street) that might harm them. God is no different.

Maybe you should try reading the beatitudes again as a reference point.

The people who are morally most monstrous are those who think they are so moral that they can innocently inflict pain and death on another person. This isn't religion. This is sickness.
