This is seriously messed up. I hope Patrick's lawyers can help him not be screwed by the system.

What's worse, I'm watching this after read another story about Georgia cops who help a homeless college student: http://www.rawstory.com/2016/07/police-and-georgia-town-rally-around-homeless-teen-who-rode-50-miles-on-childs-bike-to-college/

The other occurred in Savannah, which has a particularly rough racial history as the site of Georgia's slave markets (like sister cities Charleston, SC and New Orleans, LA) and the center of much of the trade in tobacco and cotton (because port city) grown on nearby plantations.

Savannah tends to lag behind most of the state in racial relations, despite being majority black, and is generally more like Mississippi plus gays than it is like the rest of Georgia. White cops really should not be working in Savannah if they have any racial animosity or can't tell one black guy from another.

Marla Caldwell I thought Savannah was all big houses and tree lined streets where wealthy urbanites go to experience the "real south?"
Marla Caldwell said…
Jason ON not remotely. There are squares with the "town houses" of the plantation owners, and if you go far enough outside of town some of the plantations, but most of Savannah is working class, largely black, and/or students at Armstrong State College or Savannah College of Art and Design.

Aside from the historic district homes, there is little wealth in Savannah, and not even much on the nearby islands like Tybee. Dafuskie Island is all black and pretty poor, descendants of freed slaves who started a colony there and a community of people known as gullah. It's certainly authentic for what it is, but it's not representative of much else.

Marla Caldwell That damn near sounds like rationalization.

You know that the modern police force was derived from slavery, right?

"Gotta catch them all!" doesn't mean what you think it means.
Marla Caldwell said…
Tom McGill I don't know what you think I'm rationalizing. I'm telling Jason about Savannah, that it's not "big houses and tree-lined streets" (well, the trees are real) "where wealthy urbanites go" for any reason, and that any whte cop who isn't prepared to deal with black people shouldn't be working in a majority black city like Savannah.

I am well aware that the modern police evolved from slave patrols. What is your point? It is because of Savannah's intimate history with slavery that it is more backward racially than most places.

I think "gotta catch them all" means someone has been paying too much attention to corporate slogans.
Tom McGill said…
Marla Caldwell Yet you recognized the slogan. Go fucking figure.
Marla Caldwell said…
Tom McGill it's been all over social media this week. That's all you have?
Tom McGill said…
Marla Caldwell Odd, I thought the same thing. First, you talk about the long history of how slaves were oppressed, as if that has any bearing in 2016 then sit there and try to challenge me using non-sequitur arguments which you are as equally guilty.

So, does your high horse come with high ladder too?
Tom McGill said…
(To clarify slightly to anticipate her next ridiculous argument, this shouldn't happen, ever. I don't give 2 shits what happened in the past. We allegedly evolved since then.)
Marla Caldwell said…
Tom McGill what is your deal? Of course an area's history has bearing on its current situation. It's not like the slate is cleared at the end of a year. Savannah is steeped in history, something I would think someone living in the state with Boston would understand.

Are you actually proposing that black Americans are not oppressed?
Tom McGill said…
Ah, yes, Boston. The center of the Medical Mecca of the World. (Just ask them.)

Incidentally, I identify more with New Mexico which was settled by us white folks far prior to that (just don't tell the slightly brown ones).

So you think that the rubes that live in Savannah know shit about history? NOPE. It's all cultural. I bet they couldn't even tell you even minimally detailed history of the area. Don't use that as an excuse. It's not justifiable under any circumstance. History is generally as long as a person can remember. All else is 'his story'.

If you think that is even a minimally justifiable reason, well, you're why they problem persists.
Marla Caldwell said…
Tom McGill ah no. That's a nice fantasy you have there. Too bad others don't get to live there with you. I'm just going to save my fingers typing any more responses to you because I would be wasting my time.
Tom McGill said…
Lol, then I'll declare victory and leave. Nice try though. If you want to
rapidly change culture you make stringent rules. When you want to condone
it, you say it's been that way a long time. But nice try, better luck
next time.
Marla Caldwell said…
Tom McGill you're privilege-blind. If I hadn't met my quota for the day, I'd educate you. If you think I was condoning the problem in Savannah, you need help with reading comprehension before you try to talk with the adults.

LOL, I got the email that called me "privileged" blind idiot.

As if you know my struggle in life including the fact I was victim of pedophilia, poverty, violence, reproductive coercion and so on.

But please block me (as you have already) because the your privileged likely outweighs mine.

Go hide in your bubble, Maria.

FYI, I was deemed "Not safe for women" by ridiculous Feminists on G+ years ago. Independent thought is painful, I know.
