A lot of fronts have been decrying the negative aspect of Google's new Photos app. Namely they've been touting Google's desire to know more about you - mining your data, as it were - as an evil that should be avoided, and could be, with other services.

But the fact of he matter is, they all do it. All those companies out there offering you services, whether you're paying for them or not, are mining your data. What's important isn't if they're making you the product, but what you choose to allow them to collect.

I think the reason why I'm comfortable with Google is that they don't hide things from you. You can see all your data, back it up, and even leave their ecosystem whenever you want. They even give you nice, straight forward tools to do all those things.  I just don't get that feeling from other companies.

Take the new photos for instance. I may choose to use Photos but other people can enjoy my choice without having to use photos (or any Google service).  I can share my photos with anyone I want regardless of what ecosystem they prefer.
