In the United States Ebola is a non-issue. If it weren't for Fox News and conservatives trying to find a way to pin a disease on the president, no one in this country would even care that Ebola was killing Africans by the scores.

What is very real, though, is the loss of ability to even respond to an epidemic like Ebola (the Measles, Whooping Cough, Bird Flu, Swine Flu, etc). The GOP has been strutting their stuff since GWB took office, claiming that government agencies aren't needed, that our ability to take care of ourselves - as a nation - should be the sole purview of "the market."

Like many aspects of lowering taxes and cutting funding for so-called frivolous agencies, the GOP is now clamoring for the government to do more to help people. Which, is sort of the ultimate irony.

The paranoid libertarian in me is cautious that the Obama administration is using Ebola as a way to leverage conservative states (like Texas and Arizona) into bargaining.  Obama to Gov. Perry: "I'm going to declare Dallas a danger zone and send FEMA in there, unless you agree to pull your state militia away from the Mexican border."

There's no reason to be paranoid.
