A small town in Florida is facing the same effects of industry moving out and a changing economy as much of the Appalachian states and cities such as Detroit. The town's leaders want to change their economy from one of retail and manufacturing to one of retirees and outdoor enthusiasts. Many municipalities across the country have survived and even thrived due to attracting outdoor enthusiasts. Personally, I think this is a good idea. Florida has a vibrant ecology with it's oceans, swamps and rivers. Attracting tourists and eco-travelers is a smart move for a small town.
