I'm not a fan of how Hangouts handles Google Voice, specifically for situations like this. My family and longterm friends use my cell number while everyone else gets the GV. So, when I send SMS to some people they don't know who its from.

Regardless, my brother's response is great.

Can't you just use Smart Reply?  But glad to know the son of God uses Android

Stephen Holst​, I do use SmartReply. It started sending out all SMS from GV. So my choices are always use Smart Reply (which apparently just sends from GV), always mobile number or always GV. There's no option to choose.

Because my Google voice is tied to my G+, the only problem is it shows me as Google service. But these are mostly people I don't call back.

I never user my carrier number so I honestly have never tried sending a text as that number.  I can see how that would be annoying though.
