I find etymology fascinating for a couple of reasons.

I find etymology fascinating for a couple of reasons. The largest being when you know the history of a word it helps solidify that word's meaning in your mind. At least for me.

I like etymology too. I find it fascinating, however, that "official" English words are controlled by companies who publish dictionaries. I wonder if they have board rooms full of stodgy old men with tobacco pipes taking votes around the table for each new word.

The original dictionaries were the ones who standardized spellings, yes. And yes, there rooms full of stodgy old people who vote on words, their spellings and meetings. ;)
