This doesn't quite count, but: I was flying a cross-country from Lander, Wyoming, to somewhere in South Dakota, and flew under a cloud, with more clearance than the FAA requires, but holy cow those big thunder clouds have a ton of vertical movement well away from the clouds. My flight bag was slamming against the top of the plane and then back into the seat or the floor or me, because the plane had so much vertical acceleration. I was really glad I'd zipped it before getting anywhere near that cloud, and from then on I belted it in as well. (But I kept the wings mostly level and managed to keep the plane heading mostly the direction I intended most of the time, so it was okay.)

So, you were the pilot?

Jason ON : yeah, it was my solo cross-country for getting my pilot's license. I learned a bunch about how far away to stay from clouds. (I would have flown off to one side but that was through a military operations area; in retrospect, that would have been the better idea.)

That's cool. Real world experience is always a better substitute than book lernin.
