I'm thinking something that seems merely stupid and annoying but over the course of the movie slowly becomes all-powerful through the hate and distrust between those who should fight it but end up empowering it. I think it should be an orange-colored monster.

I'm partial to ghosts, myself. Especially the unseen ones. You can't see them, can't fight them and they're always there. When the movies end up naming them and making them "physical" enough to fight, they lose their fear factor for me.
