Sarah Gerhardt was the first woman to surf the famously dangerous big-wave spot called Mavericks back in 1999, when she was 24. Now, at 42, she and five other women will compete for $30,000 in the Titans of Mavericks, surfing waves that swell well beyond 30 feet.

If you get a chance, check out Dana Brown's excellent 2003 documentary Step Into Liquid which shows surfing in the CONUS (from the big waves of Mavericks, to the Great Lakes, and the even oil-tanker wake surfing in Galveston), along with other odd places like Vietnam and Ireland. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308508

I might have seen that documentary. Following surfers around as they surf the Great Lakes, off the coat of Alaska and England sounds familiar.
