It is ironic, considering democracy’s pitiful state worldwide that, in accordance to its etymology, it literally means “common people’s rule” or, more simply, “people’s power.” The English term democracy and the 14th-century French word democratie come from the Greek demokratia via the Latin democratia. The Greek radical demos means “common people,” and kratos means “rule, or power.” How did we manage to pervert such a laudable notion of power to the people and diametrically turn it into a global system of rule at large under the principles of oligarchy and plutocracy? Everywhere we look, from east to west and north to south, plutocrats and oligarchs are firmly in charge: puppet masters of the political class. They have transformed democracy into a parody of itself and a toxic form of government. The social contract implied in a democratic form of governance is broken. - See more at: http://newsjunkiepost.com/2014/10/27/the-illusion-of-democracy/#sthash.WOverakS.dpuf

This sort of thing ticks me off a bit. Democracy is a bicycle, not a TV set. If no effort is put in, then you don't really get anything out of it. Everyone wants democracy to be a thing that you have, and that works, and that doesn't require any attention. They want it served up piping hot and ready to go - and at a price that's right. It's very easy and convenient to point the finger at politicians and go "rah rah rah political class bastards oligarchy grumble grumble", but politicians being the way they are is very much a result of the people being more interested in kissed babies and flag pins and who's on holiday when than they are about actual policy positions. The situation as described in the article comes as a direct result of the people not really giving a shit and paying attention because giving a shit and paying attention requires effort.

Exactly, Chris Moore. Democracy, as it's intended, requires a population that is aware and concerned about what's going on. The problem, in my opinion, is corporate media. They control the message. Sure, politicians have press releases, but those are dry and boring. It's better if some political pundit in a silk power tie translates that press release into the proper amount of righteous outrage.
