I fully believe the Tea Party is going to ostracize themselves from Republican party politics with their antics, not only at the national level but at the local as well.

I agree with some of that. I'm not sure government should be subsidizing the sports industry, but I'm not informed enough about what the returns are, so there is certainly a need for more time to evaluate the proposition.

The returns are actually really good considering. Would you spend $300m today for a return of $1b over the course of a decade?

Probably. But doing it on public money doesn't sit well with me. If the returns are that good and stable enough there should be other means of financing it. If the article is to be believed, it does seem like the decision might have been rushed. I'm operating on limited information though(how much return goes to the public economy vs the private sports or, etc) so I don't feel strongly either way.

There are studies on these metrics. The returns are good enough that cities actively seek out sports franchises as a boost to their economies and cities with them fight tooth and nail to keep them. Denver, for example, was under threat of the Broncos leaving if the city didn't build a new stadium for the team. That was the owner's ultimatum. Denver caved and built a new stadium to appease the franchise.

Its the same with large corporations. Seattle, for example, bends over whenever Boeing wants a concession.

Find the largest employer in any town and you've found the hidden fingers behind government actions.
