Destroy up to 40,000 lives and your penance in a measly 3-5 years. Seems fair, right?

It's extraordinary that these people, when finally caught, frequently only admit to having "screwed up", as Annie Dookhan has done here. Tampering with evidence, bringing the profession and the justice system into disrepute, and ruining the lives of thousands of people over a period of some years is more than a bit of a slip. Irrespective of whether it was because she was being all "tough on crime" or that she enjoyed the prestige involved with being the go-to chemist for prosecutors, she made a decision, not a mistake. And the result of this is not just that of people being convicted based on dodgy evidence (although that's bad enough) - there are people who, under the law, deserved their convictions who are now going to walk free as well.
