Someone people wonder why I have yet to get married. Probably, because I spent the first part of my adult life in the Army and saw some weird marriage stuff.

When I served, I had several "marriage" proposals. I turned all of them down. I put the word "marriage" in quotes because it was fraudulent- the marriages were only meant to secure better quarters and get better pay. Back then (and it's still true today), single people were treated like crap- no matter what their rank.

I saw some pretty whack arrangements myself- but even though the huge raise in pay was tempting- refused to participate.

That was one of the things I saw repeatedly, too. Kind of cheapened the sanctity of marriage in my view.

Sadly, I've seen more bad marriages than good ones, and more people married for the wrong reasons than the 'right' ones. Like you, I've never married, and am quite content to remain so. It's amazing how common sense goes right out the window when that subject is concerned, and every time I hear the word 'sanctity' associated with 'marriage', I have to suppress a snark-ass laugh.
