I've never been in an official motorcycle club.

I've never been in an official motorcycle club. The group I ride with here is loosely affiliated and while we're referred to as a "club" it's more a social club with a riding problem than a motorcycle club. No need to pledge, no need to go through a probie stage and no dues. In fact, that's our motto: no dues, no fees, just riding. No president, no treasurer, no nothing, just people with a similar interest.

A few years ago I was in Florida with my bike and a local club tried to recruit me. I told them I wasn't interested and the entire club stopped speaking to me altogether. I don't need that sort of tribalism in my life.

Michael o'donnell i think it's more of the psychological need. Any club is a support group, like originally MC's were formed by ex-military, who were missing brotherhood and understanding.

This article is some of the most white-washed bullshit I've ever read. Not to mention that much of the information is plain wrong.
Obviously, the writer did not get information directly from a club member.
My Dad was an outrider with HA in the late 60's - mid 70's. He was then the president of The Sundowners in Utah until the late 80's. He died in 1990 (unrelated to the club.)
My stepmom, who I speak with regularly, and her best friend were completely immersed in the life. We had bikers in our house from the time I was an infant. Hell, Sonny Barger came to our house regularly.
I have a great deal of respect for the club members I knew as a kid. They were my heros. It was just the life I was born into.
Brotherhood is everything to these guys. Loyalty is key. They are not all thugs but they aren't people to screw with.
I swear, writers like this are idiots. And as far as Hunter S. Thompson goes, HA hated that prick after the shit he pulled. I got that straight from club members.
So don't buy into this crap. I'm no expert but I know the way it was around my family.
Sash Walker I've read what you've posted about the MC life on your blog, along with our brief conversation about it when we had dinner with Steve Johnson.

The article did seem to be a bit 'click-baity' to me. There seems to be some slivers of truth, but it's interspersed with hyperbole at the same time. For the unknowing, hard to segregate the two.

EDIT: Oh, the point about riding alone. Security? If you're in the MC world, there's a part of that sliver of truth, but let's be real.

Can't be a 'boogie-man' around every corner, right??

Kenneth Thompson exactly. I worry about these half-truth articles because sometimes they are reckless. If someone took this as truth then it could be misconstrued that using the Mongols image is fine. That's just one example, but it makes my point.
Yeah the generations of the Gang style clubs are dying and our clubs now do just rides and charity, it's awesome
Detroit's Fastfem Yet the line between the two club styles probably isn't as thick as you might think.
Kenneth Thompson I've been around it and in it my whole life
Simply an observation - nothing more.
