Konrad said this is because of how memory athletes train: by picturing familiar places and filling them with imaginary objects, like a cow eating moss to represent the city of Moscow.
In my teens I discovered I could remember things better if I could visualize them. This tool has helped me often through the years. At least until now where my attention is constantly being pulled in a myriad of directions. I still remember things easily, but I have to take the time to commit those items to memory, thus taking away from other attentions.
