This entire article is a perfect example of western man's affects on the natural ecology. We systematically move into a new area, destroy all other predators and then become frustrated when other species run rampant. We then spend millions of dollars trying to bring the ecology back into balance when all we had to do was not interfere.

Our ability to upset the natural balance and then spend untold amounts of money correcting our prior endeavors works in all aspects of nature. We upset natural water flows and then have to create entire aqua infrastructures. We change the landscape and then suffer through altered weather patterns that require artificially adjusting rainfall. We drain swamps for farmland only to have the local ecologies suffer, then we spend billions reestablishing the swamps.

I'm not saying humanity shouldn't work the land, but that we need to be better at thinking through long term implications and balancing need with post action rehabilitation costs.
