While we all lament Russia's anti-gay propaganda policies during this winter Olympics, let us not forget the states within this union which are near or in accordance with Russia's laws.

Does anyone else see the hilarity of comparing conservative states with Putin's Russia? During the Cold War the United States did everything it could to distance it's social agenda from the 'commies' and now the social conservatives have someone to rally behind who supports their ideolistic view of the world.

Just a reminder.

Eight states limit speech about homosexuality in ways similar to, though not as far-reaching as, the Russian ban that has received international criticism ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

On the other hand, every State in the Union has bizarre, twisted laws on the books. What matters is enforcement.
I find it funny how Americans are so ethnocentric that they automatically assume our mores and cultural norms are the same everywhere else. Russia is a vastly different country than here in the US, and although I believe that discrimination against sexual orientation is wrong and backwards, most of the world doesn't share this notion - yet. Furthermore, we shouldn't be point our fingers at other lands when our own country shares many of the same discriminatory laws.

Leighton Photography & Imaging In what way was this post "ethno-centric"? He is discussing our internal politics, and rather unfavorably at that.

Furthermore, comparing negative aspects of our culture with those of other societies is pretty much the definition of not ethno-centric. You didn't understand the point of the post.

Leighton Photography & Imaging Russia is mostly wrong and backwards. Just outside of Moscow or St. Petersburg the place degrades quickly. That's the distance between San Francisco and San Diego b.t.w.

it doesn't matter if they're not prosecuted, the policies are still on the books.
