Florida has a very sensitive ecology, one that must be monitored and maintained by human hands, as a result of man-made imbalances that threaten the state's environment and yet Republican governors and legislatures have cut funding for decades on research and monitoring. Almost as though they don't want to know. And why would they? There's more money in making Florida unlivable than there is in assuring a prosperous state in the future.

And this leaves us with another perfect example of the "market" not solving the issue, leaving a government of, by and for the people to pick up the slack where corporate interests have (once again) failed their due diligence.

“Why aren’t we effectively monitoring waterways so we can predict when a bloom is occurring? And why is there so much confusion over what state agencies are responsible for issuing public-health advisories and, most importantly, posting signs at the waterways themselves?” he asked. “It’s almost like Florida doesn’t want to know it’s coming.”
