California, for all intents and purposes, is a fairly liberal state. I'm really surprised they've allowed this sort of role-sharing between two positions that have very different end-goals. One, the sheriff, whose job is law enforcement and the other, coroners, whose job is to be as objective about cause of death as possible. That these roles are combined in a vast majority of California counties is mind-boggling.

Dr. Bennet Omalu, San Joaquin County's chief forensic pathologist who is nationally known for discovering the brain injury CTE, said Sheriff Steve Moore "was using his political office as the coroner to protect police officers whenever someone died while in custody or during arrest."
