It's granting a website permissions to access your location, and possibly even data on what you surf/read (as with targeted ads).

A really bad idea.
Agreed. But I do however want to know about secret stone markings.

I'm seeing something similar in Chrome (OS X) while visiting certain websites.

Bodhipaksa yes, it happens on desktop as well.
It happens with Chrome on any OS that supports desktop notifications (IE most/all of them?)
It's meant to be a feature, not a bug. You decide.

I guess it's a feature with buggy aspects. For example I get that notification from certain websites every time I visit, even though I decline each time.
