Amazing light show on the face of a building. I have no idea how this was done.

Projectors with very precise keystone alignment and a LOT of lumens.

Reminds me of the Rendezvous Houston light show by some comic book artist back in the 80's. Mobius I think. That was impressive. Not the music mind you. Really bad electronica crap but the light show and fireworks were awesome. Those little keytar thingies were funny too. I think it's a French thing. I looked for video on youtube but only found grainy docu-type stuff not worth posting.

Jason ON To be fair this thing was almost entirely CGI.

And you know this how, Joe Lancaster ?

Lol well they didn't film the building warping folding and collapsing and transforming itself around and things crawling through it etc

That's the projector show. That was sone with a project, regular good old fashioned lights, and the building as the backdrop/screen.

And what was the video being projected?

I'll save a step... It's a technique called 3d Projection Mapping. A company called NuFormer does a lot of them and they are the ones that made them popular in advertising. They map the building in 3d, then create a 3D replica of it digitally. Then they do all kinds of cool CGI effects to it to create a video, then they 'virtually' project the video back onto their 3D model of the building facade (to get the shadows and angles etc of the video correct as it would appear to the audience) then they output a final video which is fed to several projectors which are lined up to precisely match the building in the video.

But in the end we really don't know what was being projected: was is CGI, hand drawing, 3D modeling, etc? What we do know is this show was put on before a live crowd on the side of a building using a projector, or three, and not done on a computer with graphics overlaid on a building image.

The projection was CGI. The video you see is not editied. It's what the audience saw. Amazing stuff.
