I firmly believe #DonaldTrump has to double down on immigration since it's the only real policy initiative he's been able to get going, even though the courts keep telling him to stop.

Speeding

I don't know about y'all, but we're suffering from the implementation of this broken policy in my local community, and I'm hearing lots of stories from other places, too. Including the countries and communities that we are shipping folks back to.

The criminal justice system in the United States already has issues with disproportionally punishing dark skinned folks, so we cast a jaundiced eye on pronouncements about sending back "bad hombres", but we could see the sense in it.

But we're seeing cases where grandmothers and mothers with happy, thriving children who are United States citizens, are being deported for no other reason than to create fear, and because they are easy to find. In some cases, these women would not be allowed to even visit their children in the US for ten years, or more.

And the narrative is full of words like illegal, and criminal, when it is rules that are being broken. Probably not surprising in a world where high school students are not allowed to graduate because of dress code violations, or making unapproved remarks as a valedictorian.

Churches, once again, are being seen as a useful obstacle to this policy, just as they were instrumental in abolitionism, and in the Civil Rights movement. Sanctuary is a word long associated with churches, although more commonly seen in Hollywood in battles with Vampires and other Immortals.

I'll freely acknowledge that we do not live in a world with open borders, although I sometimes dream we're heading there. Robert Frost famously wrote about how fences make good neighbors, and he wasn't all wrong. Boundaries are a useful concept in relations with other people.

But boundaries only rarely should be made with Bremer Walls and concertina wire. And I say that, having known some truly crazy folk in my time, including being related to some of them. I know how speeding tickets work. You ought not to shoot people for them, or break up their families on account of them.

That ain't right.
