This is a Republican's America.

This is a Republican's America. Privatize the prisons and march as many people into them as you can. Reduce their access to a competent legal defense and pay that private prison with money that should have gone to the public defender. Because corporations are good and public services are bad, right?

It's not just prisons, though. The GOP has systematically come up with ways to defund education and then called the education standards shabby. They've defunded the EPA and then called it into question when the agency can't keep up with it's oversight. The same with the CDC, NIH, FCC - any and all agencies. Cut their funding, watch them flail and them demonize them for not working properly.

And, as seen by this article, it's not just the federal agencies being under funded. For years Bobby Jindal's Louisiana cut budgets, gave tax breaks and then cut budgets even more. When Katrina came to their shores they called out for Federal help why decrying wasteful federal spending. (http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2011/02/louisiana_takes_more_in_aid_th.html)

The Public Defender's offices are just one symptom of an ideology that criminalizes the poor while simultaneously putting tens of millions of dollars into the hands of private companies.

This is how you create the most punitive criminal justice system in the world: you destroy the defendant's right to a fair trial by every means available. Louisiana holds a greater percentage of it's adult population in prison than virtually any nation on Earth.

Over 1% of the adults in Louisiana are in jail or prison and, of course, most of them are black or latino. Almost all of them are poor. It's not justice but slavery traveling with false papers.

This is exactly why why we need a strong federal government: to step in and stop states from treating people this way. (And that's part of why Republicans fight so hard to weaken the federal government.)
