87 octane? Seriously? In NZ Regular is 91, Premium is 95 and at least two brands have a 98 octane option.
Andrew Cutler 91 is premium in CA.

Here, too. In OH, mostly you see 87, 89, 91. Occasionally 92-93. My car wants the 87, my husband's the 91 or 92. They are nine and ten years old and still get up and go.
Mfg states premium is best for my car but mid grade won't hurt performance. Would never put regular unless i had to.

We have 85 octane in Colorado, coz altitude. If I use it, my check engine light comes on because it craps up the second catalytic converter, but if I alternate 85 and 87 every other fillup it seems to do fine. There are some modern cars with knock sensors and advanced timing systems that can mess with timing and fuel injection quantity to lean-burn higher octane fuel and improve gas mileage, but that doesn't seem to be a common feature.

My truck does fine with the 85. I used to throw some higher octane in there every once in a bit, but now I just use Costco (top tier) gas and don't worry about it.
