Marvel has a long history of tackling social issues, from the X-Men, to superheroes like The Falcon, Black Panther and Luke Cage. There was Namorita who contracted an STD and Jessica Jones who was raped on mind and body while in the thrall of the Purple Man.

Until Jessica Jones was released to Netflix no superhero cinematic outing really tackled these issues. Sure, Bryan Singer's X-Men had the scene with Iceman's parents and his "coming out" while Captain America and Iron Man have touched on the political aspects of real world vigilantes. But no one has thus far really tackled the social issues in the way Luke Cage is purported to do.
