Robocop 2014

Had a chance to finally catch this movie. I didn't know what to expect from the various reviews I'd read, some loving it and some hating it for various reasons. And, I'm bored with nothing else to write about, so this is what you get.

What did I like? The basic story was the same.

What didn't I like?
  • They gave more backstory to the (evil) corporation and less to Murphy, his partner or his family life. Yes, we get it, this is a metaphor for defense contractors trying to militarize the police industry. It didn't need to be explained in such detail.
  • In the original, Murphy/Robocop's partner was a woman. Why couldn't the partner have been a woman in this one?
  • The first film was a story about the triumph of humanity over corporate interests and technology. I remember clearly when, in the original film, Murphy's partner walks up to him and calls him Murphy when everyone else is calling him Robocop. In this film, we don't see the same struggle that Peter Weller so incredibly portrayed. Instead, we see a man who seemingly turns on and off his operations overlords on a whim.
  • "Dead or alive, you're coming with me." This was such an iconic line from the first film and we didn't hear it until the end. We should have heard it when he spotted the murderer in the crowd and a dozen more times while he was being "sedated." When the Murphy personality was dominant we should have seen more of a struggle over the "dead or alive" warning.
In short, there just wasn't any humanity to Murphy to begin with and we really don't care if he succeeds or not. Sure, special effects have come a long way since the first film, but did we really need a reboot for that? We've already seen a number of reboots fail over their original counterparts for not bringing anything special to the story and Robocop is no different.
