So, in the new Home menu, we can't get rid of "What's Hot?"

So, in the new Home menu, we can't get rid of "What's Hot?"

That sucks.

Comments

I turned off the "What's Hot" a while back. It wasn't relevant to any thing that I watched or posted.

We should all complain about it and see if we can get complaints about What's Hot into the What's Hot stream.

How do you turn off What's Hot? I hid it under the previous UI, but now it's there.

I don't think you can turn it off in the new UI.

I don't mind the What's Hot items so much, it's the quality of comments on them that make me weep for the future.
I like Gplus for the more intelligent discourse you usually find here, but the people you find on a what's hot thread almost cancel it out!

It would sure be nice to be able to edit and / or re-order those items in the sidebar.

So, you're saying "What's Hot comments = YouTube comments?"

Ha ha ha!
Kevin Sexton said…
Yeah, it's like a post ends up on What's Hot when a bunch of YouTube commenters accidentally crossed over into google+ without realizing it!

Really Kevin Anthony, you don;t mind them? Everyday, 10 to 15 "beautiful motivational messages" that are just so wonderfully heartfelt that everyone should reflect on them and comment 250 times on "oh yes, we should all remember to do this"... ? :)

Richard Hoefer I get very few of those. The Whats Hot items I generally get tend to be tech-related, or dealing with space exploration, science, sci-fi, secular issues, or photography. Basically they seem to reflect my circles and communities.
The motivational glurge posts slide through now and then but not enough to really annoy me.

I guess that means google has got my number. Kinda scary now that I think about it!

Anyways, to hide What's Hot, go to the What's Hot page from the home menu on the left.
Top right, you'll see a white box that says "What's Hot and recommended - these posts are popular on Google+" Click on the gear in that box and you'll see some options for hiding What's Hot from your home stream

Remember when things were simple?

My What's Hot stream today is pretty interesting. Led me to a Chrome Hangouts extension that I didn't know about, for one thing. Maybe a few more instances of the Dumb Keanu "What If" meme than I'd like, but absolutely no motivational glurge. I think I'll let it live! For now, anyway.

Kevin Anthony , honestly, then I don't understand why I would get so much of that. (I turned mine off per your directions, last night). The thing that would irritate me is, the item would be on "What's Hot", yet I would be seeing it when it had only 10 comments, and not that many +1s, so I would wonder, how in the world is it already on "what's hot" ? I would also see this one particular user name, I forget exactly, but it has YES in its title, and that user would always get his/her crap into the what's hot, again, even with very low count numbers. Often they never seemed to be organically hitting some algorithm... other than (and I joke) if Yonatan somehow added private hooks for that stuff because he could, and loved all that, which I can almost be certain he doesn't. Anyway, it perplexes me. But I guess more to the point, with so much personalization of algorithms presenting me a different What's Hot than you, I cannot figure out how I get the stuff. I would block practically everyone who originated that kind of material, and yet...

I've read a couple posts today that seem to suggest that if you make sure your gender is set to "male" in your profile, it will improve the quality of your Whats Hot stream. Apparently the glurgey feel-good crap gets served more to ladies and undeclared. Very silly. Also, apparently google is working to fix this.
