A Save this pod of whales share this post alert,
if you want to, will they be rescued, or die?
"ACTION ALERT: A pod of 17 orca whales are trapped in the ice right now in Northern Canada. Please phone (418) 648-2239 or e-mail: info@dfo-mpo.gc.ca - and urge the Canadian government to bring in an ice-breaker to help save these trapped whales!!!
Here's more info:
A) VIDEO: Orcas have historically not been common to the region. With their tall dorsal fins they aren’t well suited to swimming through floating ice (as you can see clearly in the foreground). The animals in this video appear frantic…it’s not clear how many there are but this may be action that has evolved to keep ice open. However, the energy demands must be formidable and it seems unlikely they can maintain this level of energy output for very long.

B) Residents of Inukjuaq are concerned that there is not enough open water for the whales to swim out. Johnny P. Williams of Inukjuak told the station he visited the whales, and they seem desperate for air."It is difficult to go near the ice since the waves from the whales are making it impossible... The breathing hole is getting smaller and smaller. Their whole body jumps up for air... An airplane was dispatched to determine how far the whales were from open water....the open ice is too far away for the whales to go on their own and only an icebreaker could help them out.http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/340884#ixzz2HUWeM6Ro
