Went to a fund-rasier/BBQ for a downed rider today. Jim, the owner at TFOG Wheelsports in Golden Colorado was apparently trying to avoid running into the car in front of him that stopped suddenly when he got smacks from the rear. Spent some quality time in the ER and is walking on a crutch.

Jim's our go-to guy for just about everything and he bends over backwards for our local riding group. We raised more than $1000 to help him cope while he can't work. He's also a year-round rider, rain, snow or shine.

Nice of you all, and best wishes to Jim for a speedy recovery. I'm thinking that aside from driving slower, there's not much a biker can do to keep such an accident from happening: car in front makes sudden stop, car behind can't react fast enough, biker squashed in the middle. But maybe other G+ ers can give me some advice here, since I've only been riding a couple of years.

I spoke with his wife yesterday and apparently what had happened was he took the Givi pillion case off of the bike but left the bracket attached to the frame of his bike. When he hit the car in front of him, he would have most likely walked away, but that bracket dug past his winter riding gear, into his hip and tore a hole from his hip to his mid-thigh. He spent 5 days in the hospital and had a number of surgeries. He's up and walking about, though, so it's all good.
