Why is it, on the one hand, women can hug, kiss and tell each other they are best friends and yet on the other hand, when they're more than 3 feet from each other they talk about each other like they are bitter enemies?

I'd like to know how a man can claim to love and respect women and then start laughing at his buddies' rape jokes while his girlfriend is sitting right next to him.
Christine Reece Depends on the context and intent. Some jokes men recognize as jokes, and some jokes aren't really jokes but more of a reflection on the person's true feelings. But, this seems like a personal question that doesn't apply to quite as many men as Jason ON 's question.

I hear them quite often, from varied groups of friends. I don't think it's anywhere near as rare as you think it is.
Christine Reece I hear women snipe at each other behind their backs constantly in every situation where I've ever been with more than 2 women included. It may not be rare, but it's nowhere near as prevalent as women attacking women within the guise of friendship. If you feel that that's a question worth asking, then maybe you should start a thread about it.

I don't hear rape jokes from my friends. If I do I tell them it's not funny and to keep it to themselves. Usually, I hear one-night-stand jokes.

Where did I say that women don't snipe at each other? Defensive, much?

I've discussed both points ad nauseum with many people, and while we've come to some conclusions about why women snipe at each other, we still haven't figured out why men joke about rape. That's why I asked about it.

Jason ON You rock. Too few men seem to stand up to that shit. :)

This bothers me too. I'd rather see them cat fight then pretend to be friends.
Christine Reece That was my point. The question for this thread was, "Why is it, on the one hand, women can hug, kiss and tell each other they are best friends and yet on the other hand, when they're more than 3 feet from each other they talk about each other like they are bitter enemies?"

Your response was, " I'd like to know how a man can claim to love and respect women and then start laughing at his buddies' rape jokes while his girlfriend is sitting right next to him."

That's a defensive thread jack. I'm not sure why you did it, which is why I believe that it's a personal issue. The first time you actually responded to the original question asked was 3 responses down. You didn't say anything at all about women sniping at each other until that point. So, to answer you question, I guess I don't hang out with guys that make rape jokes unless you're talking about jokes that mention rape in a ridiculous way, i.e. "George Lucas raped my childhood". In that case, I don't consider it a rape joke, it's just a ridiculous take on not liking the direction that Star Wars took. So, if you don't like the company that you're keeping, change company.

I don't think I've ever heard a rape joke. . .
