How many messaging apps do you use?

How many messaging apps do you use? I only use Hangouts, but that's because most people I know use Android. Not that all of them are using Hangouts, but a lot of them are.

Otherwise, I use SMS (via GV) because it's cross-platform. Windows 10 has something called "Pinger" that comes pre-installed. It looks a lot like the same functionality as GV.

I also tried BB Messenger, but no one uses it. In fact, a vast majority of my friends just use Facebook Messenger, or whatever it's called. Is there a universal messaging app? Would you trust a Chinese company/developer with your contacts, messages and location?

I use SMS. New phone has some Verizon crap... But it's not customizable. And even tech support can't tell me how to delete audio texts...

I've resolved to needing to use hangouts, regular SMS (through hangouts app), FB messenger, and occasionally Kik.

Like you Jason ON, I primarily use Hangouts. Not much need for anything else really.
If only I could use hangouts to send MMS vía WiFi, and no, I can't use Google voice. I'm with Sprint

Jason ON right now I would not use hangouts due to that virus going around that will cripple phones. But I use Google messenger with push bullet for sms I use hangouts for IM only and I will sometimes use kik

The Hangouts security issue is only if you open an message with media in it that also happens to have the malicious code. Unless you get a lot of garbage from people Hangouts is still safe enough.

I wish two things: All Android phones have to have hangouts set to the default SMS app (that way Android users who don't know what they are doing well use hangouts instead of SMS whenever possible), and that Google voice fix group messaging. Then I wouldnt have to think twice about no sharing my Verizon cell phone number with anyone
I use the app on my phone and occasionally Hangouts to send texts. I tried the Google Messenger app but I couldn't get it to copy and paste from an old message to a new one, so I ditched it.

Alex Wohlbruck I thought hangouts was the default now?

Joe Lancaster It's only default on Nexus devices, but the majority of Android phones are from Samsung, which makes "Messaging" the default SMS app until you open Hangouts, and then follow the prompt to switch it to Hangouts. Google requires that the Play store, Chrome, and a few other apps to be present on the first page of the home screen when it gets sent from the factory. If an OEM doesn't add these things, they won't be allowed to utilize Google play services (all google apps, including the Play store) and will then have to rely on a 3rd party app store and other basic apps like a messenger. I think if Google required Hangouts to be default for SMS, a lot more people would use it and it might become relevant.

Whoever makes the one messaging app that we all use will be the Bell Telephone of the 21st century; so it is kinda a big deal.
