To be fair, plague is so contagious it almost doesn't matter. At least dead people aren't coughing up more infectious material, which is typically the best infection vector.

Totally not saying this is a good idea, by the way. Just, living people spread it waaaay more effectively, as do fleas (and in our area, contact between domestic and wild animals, which is what's led to the four plague deaths in Colorado last year.)
Do not forget that there is close contact to the dead body, and that a ceremony will be visited by lots of living people. Just one infected person can spread the plague before he will know he is infected.
