Except, then Uber takes on all the ownership and maintenance of a fleet of self driving cars. While the immediate costs of not paying drivers may be reduced, the ongoing costs of energy, perishables (oil, tires, maintenance) as well as software upkeep and possibly storage. Sure, they can farm these things out to vendors, but vendors also cost money.

I'm sure the folks at Uber have run the numbers and decided they can save 10¢ a mile, or something. (That's just a guess, mind you)
