How long does the consciousnesses last after biological death?

How long does the consciousnesses last after biological death? Some scientists in England think they have discovered the answer.

Are you a believer in cognizance after death?

Depends on how you define "death" but as far as I can tell the evidence strongly shows that the mind is what the brain does.

Actually these people weren't dead which is kind of why they are around to tell their tale. Calling someone "dead" just because their heart has stopped doesn't necessarily make them so. They are dead when they fail to wake up.

People in vegetative states fail to wake up, too, John Hardy not a Turnbull fan. Are they dead?
John Hardy said…
No they certainly aren't. I'm just pointing out the sloppy use of the word "dead". Death isn't when the heart stops, death occurs when life ends at the cellular level and not a moment before.
John Hardy said…
Yes, the operative word there being "irreversible".
Jason ON said…
You said life ends at the cellular level. So which is it, when the cells cease to function or when "it's" irreversible? And what's "it?" Consciousness? We already discussed that. The heart? Can the brain function without the heart? Absolutely. So, when is death?
John Hardy said…
Death occurs with the cellular death of the entire brain including the brain stem. The irreversible part comes in because death is a permanent state of affairs. You can't resuscitate the dead.

Anyone undergoing any other experience, even if they are declared "technically dead" is not actually dead and actually not even close to dead. Death is a one way ticket, an event of thermodynamic finality.

Looks like interesting research. Whether the brain can be brought back to a functioning state after all activity has ceased is questionable. It would be hard to imagine that severe brain damage had not also occurred. None the less, the cells are still very much alive in a brain death scenario.

However, although brain dead humans are technically no longer alive, their bodies can often still circulate blood, digest food, excrete waste, balance hormones, grow, sexually mature, heal wounds, spike a fever, and gestate and deliver a baby.

"Technical" definitions used in common speech are rarely definitive.
