This is why I can't support the Death Penalty.

This is why I can't support the Death Penalty. If even one person is wrongly convicted and then put to death then the system has failed.

Imagine if you have 100 people convicted of the worst, most heinous crimes. Housing them would cost $500 million over their lives. Using the death penalty, we could save, say, $100 million. You would give up $100 million to spend on things like healthcare for children and cancer research and bridge repair (all saving possibly hundreds of lives) just so one innocent person doesn't die?

Actually Craig Froehle that's not true. The death penalty is more expensive than life in prison. I'll be glad to point you to the recourses if you cant find them.

Yes the fact that it is not cheaper serves to put a final nail in the whole concept. It really leaves no justification beyond vengeance.

See, in my mind, there's no reason capital punishment SHOULD be more expensive. That's a broken legal system (in a very different way than the one that motivated this post). There ARE cases where there is zero doubt about the perpetrator. Take Ariel Castro, for example. Had that guy not offed himself, a quick, state-arranged execution would've been appropriate. And far cheaper than paying to house, feed, and care for the guy for another 30 years or so. Or so it should be. I'm not saying we should be using CP more than we are now...just that there are clear cases where it's appropriate and those should be done efficiently.

The actual incarceration costs per prisoner exhibit a seemingly profound inefficiency as well.
