The need to respond to emergencies is constant, and the desire to help is part of our humanity. The next time you want to donate after a disaster, please consider this article. People often don't understand the logistics during a crisis, and that is why we depend on relief organizations.

- Donate directly to a reputable organization. Please do some due diligence first.
- Donate money if possible, donate your time if not. It is entirely appropriate to volunteer at your local shelter "in honor" of the victims of a disaster far away.
- Check the box that says "wherever the need is greatest" rather than specifying one disaster. Trust that the organization you are supporting will do their best, or find a different organization to support.

(Disclosure: I am an American Red Cross volunteer.)
