Aye, agreed.  I wasn't the purchasing power in the house when Beta vs. VHS was happening, though I remember it well.  But when it came down to HDDVD vs. Blu-Ray, I was rooting for HDDVD, but wasn't willing to purchase until there was a towel thrown in.  Once Blu-Ray was the clear winner, then I started reluctantly adopting the technology.

4K TVs will create consumer demand for internet bandwidth that can support it. ISPs will be forced to adapt, finally.

Nolan Leatherman Google Fiber is starting the process. It isn't exactly a monopoly. It's a few companies who own very expensive infrastructure, so they can work together to keep rates high because the costs involved in creating a competitor are so high.

Nolan Leatherman They will adapt because people will have 4K TVs and nothing to watch. So companies will begin to serve those people.
