Has anyone ever even heard of a cop doing anything like this before? A biker gets maced and that biker goes down and speed suddenly becomes the life or death decider. That is, of course, if you're not in the mountains or on a bridge.

Jason ON Sure it does, I've hit the ground at nearly that speed with only a minor injury. Racers do it all the time and usually don't get a scratch. 

Someone wearing t-shirt, shorts, and a half helmet won't be so lucky.

Of course, if you hit a tree, curb, car, mailbox, etc, while you're sliding, proper gear only helps so much and you're likely going to get quite badly hurt.

There's where we have a difference of perspective. I'm under the assumption that if you're going >100MPH you're going to hit something, whether that something is a tree, a car, a highway divider - something! We are very rarely in places as wide open as the salt flats.

That officer is a moron. If would have say that i would have pulled off to the shoulder of the road and got his badge number and called his superiors about that.
